#ADANITHEFACTS

Softys Clubhouse has produced this series of short videos where everyday people present fact-checked facts about the Adani Carmichael mine.

Why now?

Because this aint over!

The creation of this mine offers no defensible benefit to Australia or the world.

The Queensland Government doesn't even have a fixed financial deal in place with Adani and yet it has rammed through approvals which allow Adani to start destroying irreplaceable natural habitat.

From the first proposal by Adani in 2010 to build one of the world's largest coal mines in Queensland, there has been strong fact-based objection. Scientists, traditional land owners, farmers and everyday Australians have fought against Adani since the beginning, with limited resources.

On the other hand, Australian politicians have embraced Adani, despite their track record of corruption, dishonesty, environmental devistation and unsafe workplace culture leading to serious injury and death at Adani mine sites around the world. Despite this widely reportedhistory and the fact that Adani has a complex corporate structure involving a web of private companies and trusts linked to tax havens in the Cayman Islands, designed to obfuscate financial dealings, Australian politicians have taken Adani at their word time and time again throughout this process.

Politicians like Matt Canavan have even changed Australian laws to specifically favour Adani. And Adani has also spent vast sums on legal challenges to enable various approvals to be rammed through and to change Australian law to eliminate the rights of others to object.

During the 2019 federal election period, everything got so heated and confusing, we think the simple facts were muddied by anger and rhetoric. A lot of people have a fixed belief that Adani will deliver jobs and prosperity. The facts don't support that. The originally promised 10,000 jobs are now a mere 100 ongoing jobs, as Adani themselves admitted in court under threat of perjury. But during the election, politicians pandered to eroneous beliefs, rather than take the time (and political risk) to evaluate all the facts objectively and present them honestly to voters.

So we (a bunch of everyday nongs) have taken the time to pull out a bunch of straight facts. Newcastle Greens councillor John Mackenzie has recorded an INTRO video to this series. Every single fact we present has been fact-checked and referenced. And there are many more equally alarming facts. If you spend a couple of hours reading up on Adani in reliable media, you will be faced with the reality we discovered…there is no tangible benefit to Australia by going ahead with this mine. That was true in 2010 when this mine was first proposed and it is even more true now, after nine years of global inaction on climate change, as we teeter on the precipice of climate catastrophe, threatening our very survival.

Rolling Stone calls Adani "the world's most insane energy project." This is not just an Australian issue. But it requires Australian action and Australian leadership. In the absence of Australian leadership, everyday people have to step up. Inform yourself and take action.
