THE SOFTYS RADIO PROJECT

~~UPDATE AUGUST 2019~~

The Softys Radio Project is currently parked, awaiting revivification. The main gizzards of this concept is to create one week of 24hour radio, to be broadcast from Softys. The week will be scheduled in as soon as we are confident we can get it all together.

We will broadcast primarily online, but are also hoping to broadcast via a local FM band, for at least part of the time.

When the concept was first raised, we unearthed a huge number of creative Newcastle people capable of making entertaining and thoughtful radio, but we didn't manage to drum up enough gear and expertise to make the project happen.

Quite a number of the creative people have their own gear and enough technical knowledge to create their own radio segments, but they don't have the time available to do the tech work for others who don't have that capacity.

Without a budget to pay audio engineers and production people, this is a difficult hurdle.

We will definitely come back to this project when we work out how to achieve it.

The balance of this page is how it was when we first launched the concept and it all still applies.

If you can see a solution or have a pile of money gathering dust that we could use to get some more gear or pay a couple of people to work solidly on the tech side, please get in touch.

Seriously the ideas are all so good and the people who got on board have experience and are extremely talented.

CONTENT

Do you have any original music, radio plays, podcasts, factual content, comedy or weird stuff already completed? Do you have concepts you wish to complete and want to find others to help you complete it? Do you want to offer your help on someone else's project?

TECH/PRODUCTION PARTICIPANTS

Do you have technical skills and would you be willing to help others record and mix or live panel operate? Are you good at promotion? Wrangling people? Organising live audience events?

RESOURCES

We are building a basic recording studio in the front room at Softys. The equipment we currenly have is very basic and we don;t have much of it. If you have any spare old gear you could donate or lend, we would be extremely grateful - anything at all, mics, cables, computers, headphones, sound attenuation panels... Anything lent will be labelled, cared for and returned. Could your studio donate some time to master and edit prepared segments? Any studio, company or collective who helps out with gear or time will be treated as a valued sponsor.

ALREADY ALREADY

We already have a bunch of people on board to make radio - some tech people, some tech slash creative people. We want to open this up to lots of people and moosh some really different things together. Click on the sound hole of the radio above to hear a smishling of the moosh.

HEY AUDIENCE

Do you like listening to radio, podcasts and curated music? If so, let us know what you want to hear and when you like to hear it. Maybe you like 40s jazz in your earbuds on weekday afternoons while you work. Maybe you like serious interviews on Saturday mornings. Maybe you like live local punk. There's no point broadcasting without an audience - your input is valuable.
